Overton Electrical Services Ltd  Fixed Wire Testing

FWT (Fixed Wire Testing) also referred to as the Electrical Installation Condition Survey is the examination and testing of the circuits contained with the fabrics of a building premises. These includes the socket outlet, lighting circuits and various other circuits.

Why Does my Business Premise Require a Fixed Wire Test?
The two main dangers associated with electricity are the risk of shock and the possibility of fire. Over a period of time those risks are increased because electrical installations deteriorate and it is in the best interests of not only your business but also your employees that a FWT is carried out. Also your insurance policy may require that you do a require FWT as well as PAT testing (Periodic Appliance Testing)

What are My Responsibilities as a Business Owner?
It is the business owner’s responsibility and it is vital that this role is taken on or delegated to a senior personnel. Often slackness in all electrical testing may occur due to people being busy, staff not knowing who has the responsibility or simply the cost. However none of these reasons will be accepted as a defence in the event that an accident or fire occurs and as per neglect of other tests and regulations you could be fined or placed in prison. You have a responsibility to test and inspect electrical systems at work.

How often should Fixed Wire Testing take place?
As with PAT Testing the time period between tests very much depends on the workplace environment and use of the installation. Some areas, such as cinemas, are recommended to be tested annually whereas an office space, which is considered low risk, may only need to be tested every five years.

How is Fixed Wire Testing Priced?
Overton base our Fixed Wire Testing costs on a per circuit basis. You only pay for the circuits requiring testing. Also if everything is well maintained the cost is obviously lower so call us today to let us take care of your regular electrical maintenance.

What Kind of Tests are carried out?
Overton Electrical Services Ltd basically check that all fuses and cables are the correct size. Also we ensure that the installation meets all the requirements of BS7671 and that, in the event of a potential fault, all circuit protective conductors and/or devices will perform correctly to ensure the safety of any persons within the installation.

The Electrical Service Engineer will do a variety of checks of circuits including:-

Characteristics of supply at the origin of the installation.
  Visual inspection
  Continuity of Protective Conductors
  Ring Circuit Continuity
  Insulation Resistance test
  Polarity check
  Earth fault loop impedance test
  Prospective short circuit currents
  Operation of residual current devices
  Functional testing of assemblies
Full testing of all static appliances

What about Disruption to my Business during Fixed Wire Testing?
Fixed Wire Testing (FWT) requires a series of visual inspections and electronic tests to be performed to establish the safety and suitability of your electrical system. If performed correctly, you can expect that each electrical circuit within your workplace will have to be shut-down for a period of 15-20 minutes whilst our engineer sends test signals into the cables and protective devices to ensure their integrity and carries out a thorough visual inspection of the installation.

This type of work will require the main supply to be isolated and with careful planning can be done with little disruption to your business. Alternatively, this work can be carried out whilst your workplace is empty or out of hours.

Upon completion you receive a Full Report on the Condition of your Installation including the Following: –

  Installation details and characteristics
  Circuit information and test results
Schedule of items tested and inspected
A list of defects or deviations from the British Standard (which require attention)
